Hello,
My name is Nicole Rena Marion and I am a current student at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. I am an Interdisciplinary Studies major with a concentration on Community Governance & Advocacy. My cognate is focused on psychology. This major allows me to explore multiple fields of interests such as psychology, anthropology, social work, and even philosophy to determine what I believe is best for the next growing community. My goal is to help create and develop a community that is beneficial to youth in a particular area. To do so, I will incorporate my interests of mentoring and community comprehensive planning.
By graduation, I expect to have obtained knowledge on how communities are constructed and the social and educational systems and institutions that become involved. I am eager to learn how to gather a community climate to develop and implement social structures that will direct youth on a positive path towards a successful future. In order to do so, knowledge on current structured and unstructured communities and how past research and events have affected particular areas is needed. So far, this has definitely been incorporated into my studies. When I graduate, I am confident I will be well prepared to have the foundations needed to implement my own ideas on how to turn around a community. In the next five years, I am aiming to gain as much experience as possible to have an all around feel for the work I will be a part of.
My most recent accomplishment in gaining this experience is running a mentoring program for diverse youth in East Lansing. My team and I are educational tutors and mentors to children mostly from the ages 5-16. However, we are open and experienced to mentor college students, as well. This has been a great opportunity to gain a feel for youth from different backgrounds and what they need and want as a part of their educational and social upbringing. Thanks to my educational career, thus far, I am able, along with my team, to provide these youth with a sense of understanding and proactive learning skills to help them begin a successful future.
Please join me on my journey to changing metropolitan areas as we know them for the better!
